Your Life Changing Journey Has Started

You’ve received your set of the clearest aligners on the planet! So how do you care for them?

You’ve received your set of the clearest aligners on the planet! So how do you care for them?

Good oral hygiene is important for keeping your NewSmile® aligners clean, invisible, and odour-free. Although our aligners need to be removed whenever eating and drinking, if you don’t clean your trays properly, your aligners could still have a build-up of bacteria, causing discolouration - it's best to rinse your aligners each time you remove them from your mouth.

So to keep those aligners invisible and fresh, here are some Do’s and Don'ts for aligner care:

Do's:

●      KEEP ALL of your aligners in a safe place! Especially if you have pets around. You may need your previous trays at any time, and don’t want Rover to chew them up or have anything else damage them!

●      Wear aligners as directed. It's important to stay on track to wear them for 22 hours per day and to only remove them when eating and/or drinking (except when having plain water). Stay with the plan even though your aligners feel tight or loose, your teeth will slowly fit 'into' your aligners and will fully "seat."

●       Night Aligners must be worn as directed. Wear for 10 consecutive hours (do not remove them for 10 hours) daily, and if you must, remove them only when eating and/or drinking (except when having plain water). Stay with the plan even though your aligners feel tight or loose, your teeth will slowly fit 'into' your aligners and will fully "seat."

●      Rinse your aligners each time they are removed. Dry saliva and plaque create a perfect bacterial breeding ground and cause your aligners to have a bad odour - I know yuck.

●      If you experience an allergic reaction when wearing your clear aligners, get medical attention first, and then contact us.

●     Soak your aligners, and only use a soft bristle tooth-brush to remove debris. Use lukewarm (never hot) water and a little vinegar to keep your trays clear and sanitized.

This may be a good time to think about getting an extra pair of retainers for yourself (they last for years if kept well), and they're always good to have in case you misplace a set.

Cleaning your aligners | Smilelove Canada

●      Brush and floss your teeth before reinserting your aligners. Oral hygiene is key  to maintaining healthy teeth and avoiding cavities and decay. Failing to brush and floss before putting them back on can trap harmful particles between your teeth and aligner, which increases your risk for dental issues.

●     Wash your hands before handling your aligners, and put one aligner on at a time. Rinse your aligners well after removing them the first time from their packaging.

Don’ts:

●      Do NOT throw away any of your aligners, we mentioned this earlier, but can’t stress this enough because you may need them!

●      Do NOT eat or drink while wearing your aligners. Many foods and drinks can stain or discolour them. There is also an increased risk of dental issues such as cavities because food or sugar can get trapped inside your aligners. The only exception to this rule that you may keep your aligners on while drinking plain and unsugared water.

●      Do NOT use toothpaste to clean your aligners. Many types of toothpaste (especially those with whitening agents) are abrasive and can dull your aligners when used with a soft bristle brush. These small scratches created may trap bacteria.

●     Do NOT use soap to clean your aligners. Most soaps are scented and can cause an unpleasant taste when putting your aligners back on. If you must, a mild soap like Castile soap mixed with lukewarm (not hot) water is fine to use to soak your aligners.

●      Do NOT leave your aligners exposed or unprotected. When your aligners are out of your mouth, keep them in your aligner carry case. Aside from an increased risk of misplacing them, leaving your aligners in the open exposes them to harmful germs and bacteria. Also avoid putting them in napkins while dining out to avoid accidentally throwing them away thinking they're just used napkins.

●     Do NOT have teeth work done without telling your dentist that you wear invisible aligners/retainers. They'll accommodate your repair, filling, etc. so your aligners/retainers will still fit after your appointment.

●     Do NOT wear any oral piercings with your aligners
. Remember to remove them because they may interfere with tooth movement, making your treatment less effective, and potentially cause gaps to form between the teeth. Tongue piercings can also interfere with your aligners and retainers.

●     Do NOT smoke with your clear aligners on.

Traveling with your NewSmile® aligners

So you’re experiencing the adventure of a lifetime but something happened to your aligners while out of town? Below you’ll find tips from our network of licensed dentists and orthodontists who have extensive experience, from creating treatment plans and making your aligners.

What if an aligner cracks and/or breaks, is left behind, or lost? Here are some tips on what to do if you are out of town and something happens to your aligners!

●      Depending upon the length of your trip, at minimum, always take your previous step, your current step, and your next step of aligners (3 sets of trays) with you if you’re traveling for up to two weeks (and more steps if traveling for longer). Depending on how long you have been wearing the current step, this’ll determine whether you will go back to a previous step or move forward to the next step.

●      If your next aligners feel tight, or won't fit, use your chewies and bite all the way around to fully seat your aligners. This will gently push your aligners into your teeth, and your aligners should feel tight (since you're moving them into a straighter place).

How to use your chewies with NewSmile Aligners

●      If they’re too tight, go back a step and wear your aligners for 1 week more. Aligners may be worn for 2-3 weeks if they’re not seating well. If you can remove them easily and in the second week, move forward to the next set. If you are having trouble with your aligners contact us immediately.

Caring for your invisible aligners | NewSmile Life Canada

General rule of thumb: if the current aligners have a gap between your aligner (like the picture above) after wearing your aligners for two weeks, your teeth are not fully seated. Once you finish a step, your aligners should have no gap between your teeth.

●      Be prepared. Always keep your aligners in a carry-on bag when flying. Check-in baggage may be delayed or lost, and there’s always a risk of losing your aligners once it leaves your sight.

●      It isn’t always convenient to brush your teeth after eating during travel. At a minimum, rinse your mouth with plain unsugared water, and also rinse your aligners before reinserting into your mouth. You can brush your teeth when you get back to your room. This isn’t ideal, but acceptable in a pinch.

●      If you are wearing your retainers and have finished all your aligner steps, bring your final step of aligners in case something happens to your retainers. The last step of aligners may be temporarily worn while you wait for a new set of retainers to be made. Contact us immediately if you crack, break or lose your retainer(s) to purchase a duplicate set, and we recommend replacing retainers every 6 months to ensure you keep that smile straight!
